Jordan’s Gate works to provide affordable housing to low-income families, recently completing a $9 million, 26-acre development with 48 Craftsman homes, called Jordan’s Gate — indisputably one of the largest community housing projects undertaken by a non-profit organization in Alabama.

Greater Peace Community Development Corporation and its partner on the project, The Bennett Group, won the national Charles L. Edson Tax Credit Excellence Award in spring 2010. The 48 families currently occupying these houses will be able to purchase their homes at the end of the 15-year, tax credit compliance period for the price that was agreed upon at the beginning of their leases, thus protecting them from inflation. Further, Jordan’s Gate residents receive financial and homeownership training.  Most residents participate in the financial and homeownership training sessions that take place onsite.

Residents benefit from other CDC programs as well, which provide them the supportive services and education needed to become successful homeowners and active stewards of the community. The brand new, planned community also offers a clubhouse for entertaining, studying or exercising; a community garden and a playground. For nearly all residents, this will be their first opportunity to become homeowners.
